Kid Mohair Yarn

The Kid Mohair John keeps is then sent to Timaru for scouring (Mohair has about 15% grease in it) where the grease is removed to leave a clean fibre. It is then sent to Design Spun in Napier where the Mohair is combed into sliver/spinners top which takes the vegetable matter and short fibres out.

The sliver is spun, twisted with 6% nylon, creating a loop yarn (boucle). The nylon used with our Mohair limits the shedding which can occur in other Mohair yarns. The loop yarn is then brushed on a machine made like a wirebrush that draws the fibres out giving our yarn a finish that can only had with Kid Mohair. It is luxuriously soft with a characteristic fluffiness.
It is then dyed and either left on cones for the manufacture of our After Dinner Socks(link to After Dinner Socks page) and Kid Mohair Blankets(link to Kid Mohair Blankets page) or taken off the cone and either made into 50g balls for our premium handknitting yarn.

The final product is 94% Kid Mohair and 6% nylon, 100% New Zealand grown and spun. It knits to a 12ply or Triple Knit and suggested needle sizes are 4.5mm to 5.5mm.
Note: Always knit a tension square before proceeding

Kid Mohair Blankets

We use our own premium Kid Mohair yarn to make our blankets.
The blankets are machine woven at Masterweave in Masterton who have been in the business of weaving since 1989.
The yarn is woven together to form a ‘piece’ of fabric and then brushed to perfection using a centuries old brushing technique which was originally used for knitwear.
The technique involves the use of dried teasels from the thistle plant which have been adapted to fit onto a large brushing machine. No man made-substitute has proven to give a better finish than the natural teasles. This is the key ingredient to whipping up a luxurious light downy finish for our blankets.
The piece is then separated into individual blankets and a careful eye is run over them to insure there are no faults.
Our Kid Mohair blankets come in three sizes: Knee size 90cm x 130cm
Single size 130cm x 180cm
Queen size 225cm x 240cm
The Knee size throws are perfect for traveling in a car or watching the telly when you really just need something lightweight, warm and extremely soft to throw over you.
Single Size is better for a luxurious bed warmer or to snuggle into on the couch in the colder months. This is our most popular size as it can be used as a throw and an insulation blanket.
The Queen size is great for larger beds and the generous sizing will fit on top of most king size beds aswell. Our Queen size blankets have a satin trim and once you have one on your bed you won’t want to take it off!
