MohairThe Mohair fibre![]() Our Mohair is grown by Angora goats in New Zealand. The goats are shorn twice a year yielding up to 2.5kgs per fleece, 5kg per year. This process does not harm the animals. The mohair is then hand classed into different thickness grades. Kid Mohair vs Young Goat and Adult MohairJohn Woodward classes the mohair into four main grades:Superfine Kid (23-25 micron) ![]() Kid (26-28 micron) Young Goat (29 -31 micron) Adult (32-34 micron) The lower the micron the thinner and therefore softer the fibre. Mohair craft use only the finest Kid Mohair available to make our premium Kid Mohair products. Kid Mohair comes from the younger and better bred goats and is noticeably thinner and softer than the adult mohair and young goat mohair used by most Mohair product suppliers. You will be amazed how soft and luxurious our kid mohair products feel compared to products made with young goat and adult mohair. The rest of the fibre John classes is sold to South Africa for manufacturing into workable sliver and then it is exported around the world. The fibre is used to make anything from socks, suits to blankets and high end velour. Mohair Fibre Characteristics Mohair has many superior qualities to other natural fibres which is why it is labelled as a luxury fibre. It is also highly adaptable to different manufacturing processes and this combined with the superior qualities means there is a high demand for Mohair in all grades of thickness. The superior qualities are:Lustre/sheen: Mohair has a natural lustre and takes dye exceptionally well. This leads to longer lasting vibrant colours that can’t be matched by Wool, Alpaca, etc. Warmth: Mohair is a great insulator (even when wet!) and it doesn’t conduct heat like wool ensuring excellent warming qualities. Durability: Mohair is a non-crushing, non-matting, and non-pilling fibre and it is the most durable natural fibre in the world. Products made from Mohair last for years. Comfort: Our products are made from the finest Kid Mohair making them luxuriously soft against the skin. Lightweight: Mohair is a very lightweight fibre and it breathes very well allowing for lighter more practical clothing and blankets. The superfine Kid Mohair and Kid Mohair are predominantly used for handknits, yarns and specialty products, young goat mohair is used mainly for yarns, blankets and high quality suits and Adult Mohair is used in high end fabrics and velour. Mohair Washing instructionsMohair is a smooth fibre so a good shake will dislodge most dust and dirt particles. If the product needs further washing it can be handwashed in water with a light wool detergent or some fabric softener. Try to avoid over washing as this can affect the pile. Rinse with clean water. It can be spun dry and then hung over a line or laid flat to dry.To read about our premium Kid Mohair products click here To browse our Kid Mohair products in our online store click here To go back to home page click here |
